Scratch a liar find a thief

This morning started out wonderfully…well with the exception of mother nature knocking HARD on my door and making her presence known. As we set off for school and walked past the church you could see a clear view of the snow capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro.  I stood there in awe as I had never seen such a great sight so close up and personal. I was more convinced than ever that I had to conquer that mountain. OK well…despite the fact that a lot of people don’t even make it to the top due to frost bite, altitude sickness, and event death. But those are just minor details.

Today was a good day until this evening at the dinner table when we learned that five thieves were being killed at the bottom of the hill.  Since I assumed that this conversation had been lost in translation I dug a little deeper only to confirm that five people broke into a local store at midnight last night. Fast forward nearly 16 hours and they were being stoned to death my the locals…..and this was legal. They don’t even allow these people time to ask for forgiveness or plead not guilty. I’m sure I was sitting at the table with a “WTF” look on my face just as Emanuel was when I told him that people in America would go to jail for stealing and stoning and killing someone.

Although I’ve been plotting my escape from being a US resident this definitely left me proud to be an American. We may not have all the rights we want but I can’t imagine being killed by my next door neighbor with a handful of rocks. Can I get some jail time please?
